Surin Villa: Interior Design

Brief:

Following the purchase of this family of three’s new holiday home in Surin Beach, Phuket; I was tasked to redesign the existing interiors.

Deliverables:

Presentation of creative concept for interior design, including selection of materials, artwork and furniture pieces, plus custom designs.

Outcome:

From rustic beach villas in Indonesia and Mexico, to artisanal riads in Morocco, to design-leading holiday homes in western Europe - I mixed interior references from coastal towns around the world, whilst giving a nod to the villa’s host country to create a unique Thai beach house interior fit for a modern family.

The look of Tadelakt style plaster was used throughout to give a light and natural backdrop to the wooden furniture, rich textiles and bold artwork. Stucco effect water-based paints were used for the walls, and traditional lime material and artisanal techniques in wet areas due to its waterproofing properties. Tadelakt also has the added benefits of being antibacterial and anti-fungal due to its naturally high pH value.

Black matt taps, doors and window frames modernised the existing building, and also brought in an adaptable colour for adding character with textiles and furniture pieces. Dark wooden ceilings were covered with light straw rattan to further brighten the space and incorporate the beach style. Existing window blinds were replaced with double linen curtains of colours white and clay to create privacy, whilst also allowing the natural light to shine through.

Furniture pieces and fittings were carefully selected in a mix of contemporary and rustic styles to construct a bespoke and considered interior that would ensure future value was added to this home away from home.
