Lumi Cottages:
Interior Design
Project in progress.
Brief:
To re-design the interiors for the existing wooden cottages at Lumi Resort in Gilli Trawangan, Indonesia, to be more reflective of the updated identity realised throughout the Beachclub, and to bring a more contemporary aesthetic that will attract the modern traveller.
Deliverables:
Presentation of creative concept and interior design, including furniture and materials selection for Deluxe and Standard Cottages, plus supplier sourcing, production management and on-site installation with hired contractors.
Outcome:
Principal architect, Andre Matin, has an affinity for mixing Indonesian tradition with contemporary design, and thus the Deluxe and Standard Cottages at Lumi could equally assimilate as local rice barns in the villages of Lombok; as contemporary log cabins in developed territories that are renowned for their wooden structures, such as Norway, Japan or the USA.
This combination of local and global aesthestics provides an essential base for attracting international tourists, who often wish to embed themselves in the local culture, whilst maintaining some of the similarities and comforts of home.
The existing interior design and finishing, however, I feel is not fully reflective of the architecture’s intent; nor does it compliment the new aesthetic and brand identity realised throughout the Lumi resort. I therefore proposed a modernisation of materials, colours and furniture to bring these spaces in line with the entire venue.
As the cottages are set among the grass and trees, my recommendations aimed to tie into the modern log cabin aesthetic with a colour-base inspired by nature, whilst also complementing the existing design direction at Lumi, with angular furniture pieces and traditional Indonesian textiles.
